Train Trip to Ljubljana
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana is the city people forget exists until they go and then they wont shut up about it. Its tiny - you can walk everywhere in 20 minutes - and the riverside cafes are some of the most relaxed places in Europe. Perfect train weekend.
Day by Day
Day 1
- Morning.
- Coffee along the Ljubljanica river, watch the city wake up.
- Afternoon.
- Walk up to the castle - take the funicular back down if your knees complain.
- Evening.
- Dinner at Druga Violina, the kind of place locals actually go.
Day 2
- Morning.
- Central Market with Joze Plecnik's colonnade. Get cheese.
- Afternoon.
- Tivoli Park for a long walk and a beer in the sun.
- Evening.
- Metelkova art district if you want a weirder, livelier night.
Where to Stay
- Budget. Hostel Celica - converted military prison, oddly beautiful.
- Mid-range. Vander Urbani Resort - small, design-led.
- Splurge. Hotel Cubo - sleek, central, quiet.
Where to Eat
Druga Violina
Run as a social enterprise. Slovenian classics, warm staff.
Klobasarna
Just sausage and beans. Just perfect.
Lolita
Cake and coffee in an Plecnik building. Iconic.
One local tip nobody tells you
Take the bus to Lake Bled for half a day if the weather is good. 1 hour each way, totally worth it.
