Hidden Gem: Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and yet it gets a fraction of the attention of, say, Prague. The Old Town is cobblestoned and dreamy, the Kapana district is full of artists and cheap wine bars, and you can do the whole trip for what a long weekend in Paris costs in one dinner.
Day by Day
Day 1
- Morning.
- Wander up into the Old Town, get lost between the painted Revival-era houses.
- Afternoon.
- Roman Theatre - still in use, completely surreal.
- Evening.
- Dinner in Kapana - the entire district is one big food and drink scene.
Day 2
- Morning.
- Coffee at Monkey House, then the Ethnographic Museum.
- Afternoon.
- Walk up Sahat Tepe for the view across the rooftops.
- Evening.
- Wine bar crawl - try Pavaj or Cat & Mouse.
Day 3
- Morning.
- Day trip option: Bachkovo Monastery, about an hour by bus.
- Afternoon.
- Back to the city, slow lunch.
- Evening.
- Easy evening, maybe a Bulgarian theatre show if you're brave.
Where to Stay
- Budget. Hikers Hostel in the Old Town - quirky, social.
- Mid-range. Hotel Renaissance - boutique, beautiful courtyard.
- Splurge. Landmark Creek Hotel - the splurge option that isn't really a splurge here.
Where to Eat
Pavaj
Tiny wine bar in Kapana. Bulgarian wines, friendly chaos.
Hebros
Old Town fine dining, but still affordable.
Smokini
Solid grills, good for a casual lunch.
One local tip nobody tells you
Bulgarian wine is genuinely excellent and almost unknown outside the country. Ask for mavrud or rubin - both local grapes worth the trip alone.
