Rainy Weekend in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh is a city that actually gets better in the rain. The Old Town goes moody, the pubs fill up, and theres a reason every other shop sells umbrellas. We did this trip in November - cold, wet, perfect.
Day by Day
Day 1
- Morning.
- Walk the Royal Mile slowly, duck into closes (alleyways).
- Afternoon.
- Edinburgh Castle - touristy but worth it once.
- Evening.
- Pub dinner at The Bow Bar or Sandy Bell's, live folk music.
Day 2
- Morning.
- National Museum of Scotland - free, vast, perfect rain plan.
- Afternoon.
- Climb Calton Hill if the weather breaks. If not, whisky tasting at Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
- Evening.
- Dinner in Stockbridge, walk along the Water of Leith.
Where to Stay
- Budget. CoDE Pod The Court - tiny, futuristic, central.
- Mid-range. The Inn on the Mile - actually on the mile.
- Splurge. The Witchery by the Castle - theatrical, atmospheric, romantic.
Where to Eat
The Scran & Scallie
Tom Kitchin's pub. Scottish food done seriously well.
Mums
Comfort food on Forrest Road. Haggis, neeps, tatties.
Mary's Milk Bar
Best gelato in Britain. Worth the queue even in rain.
One local tip nobody tells you
Skip the underground vault tours unless you really love ghosts. The Real Mary King's Close is the better historical option.
