Valletta, Malta

Valletta is one of those cities you can walk across in 15 minutes but spend two days exploring. Its a UNESCO site, completely walkable, and in winter the light on those limestone buildings is golden. Great cheap escape from northern grey.

Mdina (the silent city) is 30 min away by bus and absolutely worth half a day. Go in the late afternoon when the day trippers leave.
