Bern is the Swiss capital nobody visits and the locals are quite happy about that. The whole old town is UNESCO, you can float down the Aare river in summer, and the pace is gentle. Two days is plenty.

Day by Day

Day 1

Morning.
Coffee on the Bundesplatz, walk the arcaded old town.
Afternoon.
Einstein House, then the bear park.
Evening.
Dinner at Kornhauskeller in a vaulted cellar.

Day 2

Morning.
Aare river swim - locals walk up, float down, repeat.
Afternoon.
Zentrum Paul Klee museum if you like modern art.
Evening.
Drinks in the Lorraine district.

  • Budget. Bern Backpackers - simple, central.
  • Mid-range. Hotel Schweizerhof - classic Bern hotel.
  • Splurge. Bellevue Palace - where the politicians stay.

Where to Eat

  • Kornhauskeller

    Beautiful vaulted cellar, Swiss-international menu.

  • Lotschberg

    Real Swiss, big portions of rosti and fondue.

  • Adrianos

    Best coffee in town and great breakfasts.

One local tip nobody tells you

Aare river swimming is the local summer thing. Get a waterproof bag, walk to Marzili, float down, dont swim past the exit point.
