Colmar is small enough that you can see the whole centre in a long morning, but pretty enough that youll want to stay a night anyway. Little Venice quarter is touristy but undeniable, and the Alsatian wine route starts right outside the city.

Day by Day

Day 1

Morning.
Arrive, coffee in Place de l'Ancienne Douane.
Afternoon.
Walk Little Venice, the Pfister House, the Maison des Tetes.
Evening.
Dinner at JY's or Wistub Brenner for proper Alsatian.

Day 2

Morning.
Unterlinden Museum - the Isenheim Altarpiece is staggering.
Afternoon.
Wine route villages - Eguisheim, Riquewihr - by car or wine tour.
Evening.
Back in Colmar for a quieter dinner.

Where to Stay

  • Budget. Hotel Saint Martin - simple, central.
  • Mid-range. Maison Martin Jund - winemaker's guest house, charming.
  • Splurge. Hotel Le Marechal - on the canal, beautifully done.

    One Michelin star, ambitious modern Alsatian.

  • Wistub Brenner

    Real Alsatian wistub, choucroute and flammkuchen.

  • Le Comptoir de Georges

    Lighter modern French, lovely lunch.

One local tip nobody tells you

If you can, visit in December for the Christmas markets - Colmar is one of the most beautiful Christmas towns in Europe. Otherwise May-June for the flowers.
