Ohrid is on a 3-million-year-old lake on the Albanian border, has 365 churches (supposedly), and is one of the cheapest European city breaks you can take. UNESCO listed both the town and the lake. Very underrated.

Day by Day

Day 1

Morning.
Arrive, walk the lakefront promenade.
Afternoon.
Climb up to Samuels Fortress, see Plaosnik on the way.
Evening.
Lakeside dinner, freshwater trout if you eat fish.

Day 2

Morning.
Boat across the lake to St. Naum monastery, swim there.
Afternoon.
Back in the afternoon, slow time in the old town.
Evening.
Drinks on a terrace overlooking the lake.

Day 3

Morning.
Day trip to Bay of Bones (a prehistoric pile-dwelling reconstruction).
Afternoon.
Last lake swim, lunch.
Evening.
Easy departure.

Where to Stay

  • Budget. Sunny Lake Hostel - friendly, lake views.
  • Mid-range. Villa Forum - in the old town, beautiful.
  • Splurge. Aleksandar Palace Hotel - lakefront, large.

Where to Eat

  • Restaurant Letnica

    Classic Macedonian by the water.

  • Kebapcilnica Destan

    Cheap kebaps, busy lunch spot.

  • Dr Falafel

    If you need a vegetarian break.

One local tip nobody tells you

Macedonian wine is cheap and good - try Tikves or Bovin labels. Bring some home, you wont find it anywhere else.
