Reykjavik Weekend Escape
Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik in winter is the dark-skies, hot-pot, northern-lights weekend Europeans have discovered hard. The city itself is small and walkable, but you come for the day trips: the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon, sometimes the aurora. 2 days is tight but doable.
Day by Day
Day 1
- Morning.
- Arrive, breakfast at Sandholt bakery.
- Afternoon.
- Walk Laugavegur, Hallgrimskirkja for the view.
- Evening.
- Sky Lagoon at sunset (skip the expensive Blue Lagoon), dinner at Matur og Drykkur.
Day 2
- Morning.
- Golden Circle day tour - Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir.
- Afternoon.
- Back to town for a swim at Laugardalslaug local pool.
- Evening.
- Last dinner at Snaps, hope for northern lights on the way home.
Where to Stay
- Budget. Loft Hostel - design hostel, rooftop bar.
- Mid-range. Hotel Borg - art deco classic.
- Splurge. The Reykjavik Edition - newest luxury option.
Where to Eat
Matur og Drykkur
Modern Icelandic, beautifully done.
Baejarins Beztu
The famous hot dog stand. Cheap, perfect, late night.
Sandholt
Best bakery in town, do breakfast or coffee here.
One local tip nobody tells you
Skip the Blue Lagoon for the Sky Lagoon - half the price, ten minutes from the city, and just as nice. Or just go to a local pool.
