Reykjavik Weekend Escape

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik in winter is the dark-skies, hot-pot, northern-lights weekend Europeans have discovered hard. The city itself is small and walkable, but you come for the day trips: the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon, sometimes the aurora. 2 days is tight but doable.

Day by Day

Day 1

Morning.
Arrive, breakfast at Sandholt bakery.
Afternoon.
Walk Laugavegur, Hallgrimskirkja for the view.
Evening.
Sky Lagoon at sunset (skip the expensive Blue Lagoon), dinner at Matur og Drykkur.

Day 2

Morning.
Golden Circle day tour - Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir.
Afternoon.
Back to town for a swim at Laugardalslaug local pool.
Evening.
Last dinner at Snaps, hope for northern lights on the way home.

Where to Stay

  • Budget. Loft Hostel - design hostel, rooftop bar.
  • Mid-range. Hotel Borg - art deco classic.
  • Splurge. The Reykjavik Edition - newest luxury option.

Where to Eat

  • Matur og Drykkur

    Modern Icelandic, beautifully done.

  • Baejarins Beztu

The famous hot dog stand. Cheap, perfect, late night.

  • Sandholt

Best bakery in town, do breakfast or coffee here.

One local tip nobody tells you

Skip the Blue Lagoon for the Sky Lagoon - half the price, ten minutes from the city, and just as nice. Or just go to a local pool.
